Diphtheria in Ukraine
On October 22, in Zakarpattia, the first case of diphtheria in the region in the last 10 years was recorded at Uzhhorod National University. The very next day, a quarantine was declared at the university, and 15 students were hospitalized. Ukrainian doctors turned to India for international assistance, as the serum for treatment had run out.
On October 24, the first case of diphtheria in Kyiv was registered in a 9-year-old pupil of one of the capital's lyceums.
On October 26, in Ternopil region, diphtheria infection was recorded in a man who had been vaccinated against the disease.
The most effective method of preventing diphtheria is vaccination. Although even the vaccine does not give a 100% guarantee that a person will not get sick, with vaccination diphtheria proceeds in a much milder form.
